Art Talk with Marty Epp Carter
Nature, art journaling, camping, travel, overland excursions, and more.
Marty Epp Carter’s printmaking and collage artworks are loaded with intrigue. There's an emphasis on nature, journaling, camping, travel, and more.
December 2024 — Marty Epp Carter retired from an accidental teaching career 18 months ago. Since then, Epp Carter has been looking both forward and back to establish a structure for their daily studio practice. In this informal interview session at Wilkinson ART, Joel and the audience asked questions hoping to find some insight into the mysterious worlds Epp Carter creates in their work. As prompts for the questions, we examined a series of fine art etchings, some recent, some as old as 20 years. The common thread, the uniting element is what came out in Epp Carter’s answers to the questions.
References to destinations like Eisenhower State Park, Lake Texoma, Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Cheaha State Park, Buckhorn Campground, and scribbled notes that read:
Very windy, 98 degrees no shade except at this slat shed. A platform & bench. Bison dung and blood on platform.
More notes showing locations of mesa, layers of caprock, butte, scrubby brush on mesa. This is nature journaling begun and created on location directly to copper etching plates.
Finish work and printing is done in the artist's studio after returning home from travels. Overland excursions documented in printmaking form.
